As a reader I appreciate a good opener. As a writer I’m always jealous of those great first lines. How do they do it? Ugh!
Below are some of my favourite first liners in books. I’ll share where they come from too. It will also be interesting (to me anyways) what I rated these books in the end. Because I’m sure they weren’t all five star reads.
They were thirteen the first time they broke into the toy factory.

This was a five star read. One of the first lot of contemporary books I started reading back in 2019. That line just makes you wonder what these guys get up to. You know they are trouble but who wouldn’t want to break into a toy store.
Maxwell White’s instincts had proven correct—there was something severely wrong with the person he was following.

This was also a 5 star read. Right away you wanted to know why Max is following someone and what he is seeing that he thinks this person isn’t ok.
Will Darling was outnumbered by books.

I mean who doesn’t want to read a book where it starts with the MC inheriting an old book shop and is surrounded by so many of them. This was a 4 star read for me.
The grey awful misery tangled round his heart and throat, choking him, sickening him with the vileness of his own nature.

Another Kj book. This start sounded like some dark poetry. Which I adore. This was a 4 star read and a great series. One of the first books I read by this author and loved.
There are monsters in the world. There are monsters in the woods.

I read this and an arc and loved it. The dark romance. The magic system. The cover 🩵. This was a five star read
That’s all for today. I think I could do a part two and see what others I can find.
